Originally a moshav – a small agricultural village known for its citrus groves -the town developed into a diamond cutting centre in the 1930’s. Today’s tourist Netanya is a pleasing bustle of cafes, restaurants, boutiques, galleries and entertainment venues; the resort is part of Israel’s festival circuit.

Netanya’s finest feature is the beautiful beaches along which it’s possible to ride horses as well as swim and take part in water sports. Above the beach runs a rugged clifftop promenade which constitutes part of the “Israel Road”. This is a marked path which extends the entire length of the country from Kibbutz Dan in the north to Eilat in the south.

Ancient history sites in the area include the Um Khaled Khan, dating back to the Mamluke period, and marked by a 1000-year-old sycamore tree. The Diamond Centre Museum tells more recent local history with its exhibition of stones and model diamond mine. The Pninat Shabtai Museum features an exhibition of Yemenite folklore.

Nature lovers can stroll through the southern section of the city to visit the Iris Reserve, abloom in February and March, the Nahal Poleg Nature Reserve containing fauna unique to the area, and the Udim Reserve, featuring a pool populated by turtles, fish, and water birds.
