While this body of water got its name because fish can’t live in its salty depths, floating in these mineral-packed waters is highly therapeutic. Deposits of black mud from the sea bed are another source of nourishment for the skin, while the bromide in the air is also beneficial to the system.

A float in the Dead Sea at your hotel or a day spa, a hike around Ein Gedi and a visit to Masada can be topped off with a visit to one or more of the ancient monasteries built into the cliff walls in this area. In the fourth century asceticism became popular among Christians, who wanted to live their lives under the same privations as Jesus. The Judean Desert became a popular destination for monks, who built the monasteries of St. George, Quruntul, Khozeba and Mar Saba into the desert cliffs. Some are still operating and welcome visitors.
