Herod chose the site of a small Phoenician harbour marked by the relic known as Straton’s Tower to lay out a classical Greek city complete with amphitheatre and stadium in 22BC. He also constructed an artificial harbour by making use of concrete pilings under water – the first ever such use of concrete.

Thanks to an excellent interpretative programme on the site, visitors can see how the city looked in its glory days, while holographic characters bring the story of those times vividly to life. After watching a film which re-enacts Herod’s achievements, visitors can walk along the ancient city walls and around the towers, wander through the ruins of castle and temples, sit on the steps of the amphitheatre and soak up the atmosphere of this ancient Mediterranean port. Cafes and restaurants keep the ambiance alive even after dusk, when the national park closes.

Caesarea also offers modern pleasures. Golfers can try their swing on the lush fairways of Israel’s only 18-hole golf course, while shoppers are catered for in city malls and racing fans may catch a meet at the hippodrome of the national park. Music lovers will enjoy the concert programme performed outdoors in the beautiful Roman Theatre and culture buffs will also want to explore the Ralli Art Museum.

Apart from cultural activities, jeep tours, paintball matches, Tai Chi on the beach, yoga workshops and treasure hunts are all available in Caesarea. Diving enthusiasts can explore the underwater ruins in the archaeological park beside the port, and there is a fine spa and beach club.
