Be’er Sheva

Be’er Sheva The capital of the Negev is a bustling modern city which houses some hidden cultural treats. Its history is as old as the Bible; Be’er Sheva is named in Genesis as the site of the well where Abraham, father of the Jewish people, made peace with Abimelech, king of the Philistines, more than 3000 years ago.

Tourist Information

For millennia, Be’er Sheva’s collection of wells has attracted Bedouin nomads who stopped here to water their flocks, and the weekly Bedouin market is still held here every Thursday. However, today’s visitors are more likely to find trainers and electronics on sale than the carpets and camels of old.

Modern Be’er Sheva was founded at the start of the twentieth century by the Ottomans, the only city the Turks constructed in Israel. Remains of buildings from this period and the time of the British Mandate which followed can be seen in the characterful Old City. These include the elegant and beautifully restored Governor’s House, which today houses the Negev Museum of Art.

Other relics of the Ottoman period include the Turkish railway station built during the First World War; the station manager’s house, the water tower that supplied the steam engines and an early 20th century mosque

Tel Be’er Sheva, five kilometres east of the city, is usually identified with biblical Be’er Sheva. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it contains the ruins of a walled city from the early Israelite period of the 10th century BCE. Apart from visiting the ruins, other activities in the area including skydiving at Sde Tieman Airport, where the largest professional parachute brigade in Israel is headquartered, and exploring Tel Be’er Sheva National Park.
