Beersheba is 4,000 years old. Today, the city of Beersheba is capital of the Negev Desert and home to some 200,000 Israelis. Its most ancient sites are the Turkish post office and the British war cemetery dating from the early 20th century, but the remains of Abraham's ancient well are visible at Tel Sheva, just outside town. The city is home to one of Israel's finest educational institutions: the Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Tourists flock to the city for the weekly camel market - every Thursday morning. This is the perfect place to stop for lunch on the way to or from Eilat and offers amazing views out over the desert.
